2K Hires Apex Legends Producer to Revitalize Troubled Hero Shooter Project Ethos
The renowned publisher has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to oversee the development team at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the forthcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Transition Follows Lukewarm Feedback
The new appointee takes on the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming early showing last autumn.
Recently, the company's top executive a key figure updated team members about this organizational change through an official communication, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had shown the necessity for a more defined direction.
The president stated that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a revised vision, aiming to satisfy community desires.
Trend of Key Recruitment
This announcement echoes a comparable action taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock development group.
Below is the entire text from Ismailer's memo:
Dear Team—
I understand you all just completed your town hall - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a message, I expressed the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most driven and creative developers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that relationship to endure.”
Through your commitment and adaptability, particularly over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.
The gamer responses from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It confirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the necessity for a clearer vision.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the feedback to heart and reimagined Project ETHOS with a renewed direction - one that’s positioned to deliver on its potential to our fans.
The belief in this project strengthens every day. To advance the outstanding development you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce the new hire as the new Lead of the team. After some time of conversations, Ben officially joins us on next week.
His guidance and experience in the PVP shooter space is considerable, having spent the past decade and a half developing and overseeing some of the most recognizable series in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in greeting him soon. We are all excited to persist seeing the development of the game in the weeks to come.
David
Background of the New Leader
The appointee currently serves in the role of senior developer and head of production at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman previously was employed at Treyarch and Activision in various production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, earlier in his career, had periods at other industry leaders.
Game Information and Vision
The upcoming game was revealed in last year alongside a community playtest. Then, the developers portrayed the game as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative step forward on the style."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the official summary reads. "Challenge the rivals with new abilities, challenges, and tests that change every match. Will you leave securely with your collected items? Alternatively aim high, gamble everything, and hope your group can earn top ranking? The decision is yours."
The game lacks an announced release date or supported systems, but players can look forward to more updates as development continues.
